Twenty volunteers, including teenagers on their school holidays, helped us trample and rake wildflower hay cut from Gravetye Manor’s historic meadow onto Sweet Briar field, east of the Manor. Until recently, the field was managed by a tenant farmer and had low biodiversity.
Now that the charity owns and manages all the estate’s fields, we can begin improving them for wildlife. Introducing wildflower seed to the soil should help establish a species-rich meadow for pollinators, birds and small mammals, while creating a more beautiful landscape for people to enjoy from the High Weald Landscape Trail.
We will share an update next spring when the first plants begin to appear.
